Patient questions. Clear places to start.
Explore common questions about consultations, planning and recovery. For advice about your own health or proposed procedure, speak with your treating team.
Consultations and referrals
Do I need a referral?
A referral from an independent GP or other medical specialist is required for cosmetic surgery. This is separate from Medicare rebate eligibility. Ask the clinic what to provide before attending.
Do I have to know which procedure I want?
No. Explain your concerns and goals. Your surgeon will assess suitability and discuss options, limitations and alternatives.
Can I bring someone with me?
Ask the team when arranging your appointment. A support person may help you remember information and discuss practical planning.
Choosing and deciding
Can I request a particular surgeon?
Yes, you can enquire about a named KPAS surgeon. The team can also explain the surgeons’ clinical interests.
Will surgery guarantee the result I want?
No. Outcomes vary and limitations and risks should be discussed individually. Photographs show particular cases, not a guaranteed outcome.
Can I take more time or seek another opinion?
Yes. A consultation does not commit you to surgery. You can ask further questions, delay a decision or seek another opinion.
Fees and arrangements
How much will my surgery cost?
An individual estimate depends on assessment and the proposed treatment. Ask about consultation fees beforehand and request an itemised estimate for surgery.
Does private health insurance cover cosmetic surgery?
Do not assume a benefit applies. Confirm eligibility for the proposed care directly with your fund, including exclusions, waiting periods, excesses and gaps.
When should I book travel?
Discuss the consultation, consent and follow-up sequence before making bookings. Your care may require more than one visit.
Preparation and recovery
Should I stop my usual medicines?
Do not change medicines using general website advice. Give your team a full list and follow the instructions they provide for you.
When can I return to work or drive?
This depends on your procedure, progress, medication and activities. Ask your treating team for individual restrictions and clearance.
What if I am worried after surgery?
Follow your discharge contact and escalation instructions. Seek urgent medical assistance for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms rather than waiting for a website reply.
Still have a question?
The KPAS team can help with appointment arrangements and direct your enquiry. Clinical questions about suitability, risks or recovery need an individual discussion with the treating practitioner.
